Foods That Increase Immunity during Monsoons.

It is a common fact that the immunity of the body is significantly compromised during the rainy season as the microbes in and around the body multiply exponentially, due to conditions, more conducive to their propagation.

It is more beneficial to go to natural remedies, to brace our immune system.

Nature has provided us with abundant means to overcome any kind of challenges that this season brings with itself. It is for us to pick and choose the option that’s most efficient for our body, given that there are many variables.

Immunity can be boosted in two ways, broadly categorized under the foods option:

By Vitamins and minerals
That strengthen the immune system to fight bacterial and viral infection in the body.

Through Antioxidants
The role of these is to clear out the free radicals of the body.

Tea, amongst many other, is an excellent source of antioxidants that help to control and eradicate these free radicals.

It is impossible to include all the immunity-boosting food items in the scope of this article. But we have tried to include the top of the line items in this blog.


One of the best food item to fight any kind of infection, it is at the top of the list of super ingredients. In fact, it is advised that even young children and the elderly too should drink a glass of turmeric with milk each day. Since on its own, turmeric has hot internal properties (Garam taseer), it is advised that it should be ideally combined with milk for optimum results.

Amla or Gooseberry:

One of the superfoods of nature, it is full of therapeutic value. It can be eaten raw, as Achar(pickle) or even in the form of Murabba, with reduced amounts of sugar in it.

Tulsi or Basil:

Full of medicinal properties and antioxidants, they can be used in tea for boosting one’s immunity during this season. They can also be added to salads or smoothies to enhance its taste and to include it in our daily diet.


It is a vital ingredient that not only provides immunity but also gives symptomatic relief in certain conditions like throat infection.

Garlic and Ginger:

Another absolutely key elements of Indian cooking is also one of the most effective foods to boost one’s immunity without making any extra efforts- as it can be added to the existing menu.

Star Anise & Black Pepper:

These  strengthen the immune system and can be easily added to our daily cooking.

Nuts and Seeds:

Extremely rich in minerals and antioxidants, they can be added to salads for extra crunch or can be eaten on its own as a raw snack.

Vitamin C:

Nimbu pani, citrus fruits and tomatoes are the easiest way to increase Vitamin C in our diet.  However, they should be eaten as raw as possible and need to be replenished at regular intervals.

Since it is a water soluble, the body loses it along through sweat and urine, so they need to be taken in increased amounts during this season.


Dishes like curds, lassi etc. are natural store house of probiotics and must be included in our daily meals to fight off infections through better digestive process.


Apart from being tasty, they have great medicinal and therapeutic value and are versatile enough to be included in the menu.

Dark chocolate:

Dark chocolates are a great source of natural antioxidants, they can be judiciously included in our diet, as a treat for the taste buds, as well as the immunity boosters.

Indian cuisine in itself encompasses all the natural super foods which are easily available. These are all immunity boosting items that not just improve immunity but also offer a wide selection in terms of choices.

It is absolutely not necessary to stick to an inflexible regime over long periods of time rather one can always mix and match these food items for a variety of, both, taste and proficiency.  As different groups of ingredients fight different kinds of microbes, it is an effectual approach to keep varying them from time to time.
